Protect Yourself
As with any other respiratory virus such as the common cold and other forms of flu, health officials say the best way to avoid catching or spreading the flu is to follow these simple steps:
- Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. If you sneeze or cough into a tissue, throw it away immediately.
- Wash your hands regularly throughout the day with soap and hot water and make an extra effort after you sneeze or cough.
- Avoid contact with people who appear ill. If you have to interact with them, keep a safe distance and do not shake hands with them.
- If you feel ill, stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids.
- Call your doctor if your symptoms get worse or do not get better within a few days. Your doctor can advise you about where to go for help. Hospital emergency rooms should be used for only the most extreme cases.
