DTV 2009: Digital Television Begins February 17, 2009
What you need to know before the switch Updated February 13, 2008 At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full power broadcast television stations including the major networks will stop sending out their signals in analog format like they've been doing since television began. They'll start transmitting in digital signals. Anyone who receives television signals over the airwaves with an antenna (roof mounted or those attached directly to the TV) will need a special converter box to continue using their older, non-digital TVs. Anyone who subscribes to cable or satellite TV or who has a digital-ready set will not need this converter box. To help defray the cost of the converter boxes, the federal government has coupons available. Each household may receive up to two $40 coupons to apply toward the purchase of converter boxes.
